About Lutha & Lüthårt
Lüthårt | NY Surf Art (and skulls) by Lutha Leahy-Miller
Conceived in a dark NY winter and then born the son of a surfer in CA in 1976, Lutha is the natural inheritant of both NY and CA surfing and surf-art. All straight through his blood, bones, & marrow; no choice but to surf and make art.
After bodysurfing his 1st wave to shore at 6 months of age, (true story) Lutha was deemed fit live the surfing life.
He has lived, worked, studied, and surfed in the Hamptons, Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, California, and France.
"I try to express the speed and flow of surfing in my artwork as best I am able via hand drawn 2D images laden with intense color. Many of my Lüthårt drawings include stylized speed or motion lines to illustrate the path and velocity the surfer takes across the waves."
Lüthårts main influences are: Katsushika Hokusai, Robert Williams, Rick Griffin, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein, Hieronymus Bosch, Hergé, Bernie Wrightson, Osamu Tezuka, Himalayan art, Pacific Northwestern Native American art, and lastly the amazing NY graffiti artists of the 80s and early 90s.
"Unfortunately, it seems most of the surf art out there all looks the same, and so I am trying to take my NY art background and put the 'ART' back into surf art. I am trying to make surf art on more of a fine arts, or at least as much tangent to fine art as possible, and to do so in an original and different and exuberant style."
